Black smoke swirled and drifted into the crowd, raising tears to the eyes and the stench of burning flesh and narcotics to the nostrils. Again the wind picked up, a strong gust this time, momentarily flattening the flames in front of the altar and clearing the acrid smoke from the people's view. Wind rippled and billowed at the heavy linen covering the body, and in a moment the fire recovered, stronger now than before with the steady fanning, and leaped, avid and hungry, at the hem of the embroidered cloth. Just as the roaring flames had completed their possession of the sacrifice, a last gust whistled through, flipping back the hem of the fabric from the head of the body and exposing the pink, gaping flesh wound across the throat, raggedly torn, rather than cut, as if by the teeth of a wolf—or the edge of a serrated blade.

The crowd roared in lamentation and ecstasy, and King Bleda stared one last time at the glowering, storm-laden skies of Hunnia before the braid of his hair burst into flame and his pale, gaunt face disappeared forever behind a curtain of black smoke.
